Students and Staff at Burgess Hill School for Girls have raised money for the people of Haiti affected by the recent earthquake, through a number of fundraising activities.
Junior School pupils donated all money raised from their Burns Day celebrations to Haiti. On Friday 29th January, the Junior School pupils donated a minimum of one pound to the appeal so they could dress in tartan clothes for the day. Girls in Burns house also donated prizes for a tombola. The total amount raised by the Junior School was £500.
Staff and pupils are also sponsoring Head of Sixth Form, Mr Tim Butterworth, who has pledged to run the 13 mile Brighton half-marathon on February 21st in aid of the children suffering in Haiti. He said “I have chosen UNICEF as my charity as I was struck by a news item focusing on the orphans of Haiti.”
Mr Butterworth has set himself the additional challenge of completing the run in less than one hour and 45 minutes in the hope of collecting more money if he can achieve his target.
The Senior School held an assembly on the Haiti earthquake, with pupils donating £255 towards the Disaster Emergency Committee’s (DEC) appeal. Year 10 are also holding cake sales throughout this week to boost the School’s donation.
