Protest was the topic of debate at a Public Speaking Competition for schools recently.
The tightly fought competition took place at Brighton and Hove High School on Tuesday 2ndFebruary and Burgess Hill School for Girls emerged victorious with their argument for the right to protest.
The competition was the Preliminary Heat of the Brighton, Hove and District Branch of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) and was open to all local schools.
Representing Burgess Hill for the first time, Elizabeth Cody (Year 11) spoke passionately about the fundamental importance of the right to protest in a democratic society. Fellow newcomer to the event, Rowena Henley (Year 11) performed very competently as a Chairman and Madeleine Whelan (Year 11) proved to be a challenging and engaging Questioner.
Headmistress Ann Aughwane said “I am delighted that the girls’ skill and hard work has been rewarded. We are now looking forward to the next round.” The next round takes place on Thursday February 25th 2010.
