A giraffe. An oil rig. A space monster. A strange and twisted version of the Eiffel Tower. What, you may ask, connects these four things?
As it turns out, the Lower Sixth Life Skills lesson on Wednesday 27thof January, which found over fortygirlssprawled on the gym floor trying to figure out how to turn newspaper,Sellotape, foil, and a pitiful little bulb into a grand, not to mention functional, lighthouse.
The random objects listed above? The shapes that a few of our lighthouses resembled after we were finished, pulling together as teams to fight for the prize for having the most aesthetically pleasing or tallest lighthousebuilt in 45 minutes.
The atmosphere was competitive as we pulled on all our knowledge of physics to get the things to stay upright, thenspent the remaining time during the judging shrieking at anyone who went within five inches of thewobblingstructures as their lights flickered dully.
Needless to say, a couple did fall down, multiple times, despite the several tonnes ofSellotapeanchoring them to theground. The creators of the winning lighthouse rejoiced and carted it back to our common room, where it shall rest until someone can be bothered to throw it away.
