On Sunday 7th March the Burgess Hill Under 11 Hockey team went to Eastbourne to defend their title as the Yazoo county hockey champions.
The first pool saw the girls beat St Bedes A 1-0 and Moira House 2-0 but then lose to a strong Ardingly team. The Burgess Hill girls, who wereplaced 2nd in their pool, went through to the semi finals to meet the first place team in the other pool, Farlington.
The girls played exceptionally well and went in at half time 2-1 up. Rebecca Chee scored both goals, including the goal of the tournament by hitting the ball into the top of the net. Burgess Hill scored their third goal from the top of the circle. Farlington were denied a late penalty flick and the ball travelled down to the other end of the pitch where Burgess Hill gained a short corner. Lucy Perry shot the ball in the goal to make the final score 4-1.
The Burgess Hill girls went through to the final to play St Andrew's School, the team they played in the final last year. After a lot of pressure, Burgess Hill’s Johanna Lawless scored. It was a frantic game but St Andrew's were unable to capitalise on any opportunities, with Caitlin Slater making some crucial saves in the goal. Burgess Hill were pleased to hear the final whistle and retain the trophy.
