Friday 23rd April was an important day for three Burgess Hill School for Girls' pupils as they competed at the UK Final of the English Speaking Union (ESU) National Schools Public Speaking Competition.
The competition took place in the historic and prestigious Old Hall of Lincoln's Inn in London, which was especially fitting as it was St George's Day and the anniversary of Shakespeare's birthday.
Well known journalists Kate Adie and Sue MacGregor, together with Roger Tilbury of the ESU formed the judging panel.
Representing the South East Region, the Year 11 team of Rowena Henley, Chair, Elizabeth Cody, Speaker and Madeleine Whelan, Questioner, performed their roles effectively against stiff opposition. They were awarded third place, only four points behind the winning team, and the highest placed independent school in the competition. Madeleine was given the award as the UK's best Questioner in 2010.
Mrs Judith Edey who runs the public speaking club at the school said, "This is a very impressive achievement, particularly for Elizabeth and Rowena, who only started competitive Public Speaking this year. Special congratulations go to Madeleine who was judged best Questioner."
