Writing with old quills and ink are not usual practice at Burgess Hill School for Girls, however Year 3 did just that when they visited Fishbourne Roman Palace in Chichester, West Sussex at the end of term.
The girls took part in a workshop where they learnt to write the Roman alphabet with old tools and create their own mosaics from small brick pieces and sand. The girls also had the chance to dress up in Roman style clothes, examine old artifacts, build an archway from bricks and make rubbings of a replica bronze mirror found in Gloucestershire in the First Century. The girls also visited the North Wing of the Palace and the grounds.
The annual trip, which is part of a topic on the Romans and Celts, is always a highlight of Year 3 at Burgess Hill School and this year was no exception, with one pupil calling it "the best trip ever!" "We saw some brilliant mosaics and a skeleton!" said one excited Year 3 pupil on their return.
Year 3 teacher, Brenda Cameron, reported "A great time was had by all the girls and it was lovely for them to see for themselves how the Romans used to live."
