Pupils from Burgess Hill School for Girls had a successful weekend after winning numerous prizes at the first Lindfield Arts Festival which took place from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th May throughout Lindfield village.
The first triumph of the weekend came as the senior school's entry into the Junior Sculpture Competition was awarded first place. The sculpture, which had to be based on recycling, was commissioned for display in the hairdressers' window and created by a class of Year 8 students. It depicted five people's heads, with hair created from recycled materials such as aluminium foil and cotton wool, surrounded by decorated shampoo bottles.

Winning second place in the competition was the Junior School's sculpture, created by the Infant classes. The piece, a robot named Ro-becca, made of broken toys, was displayed in the local toyshop.
Saturday brought more successes for Burgess Hill School as their pupils won five of the six top places in the 'Made Again' Catwalk Show with a Conscience. Pupils were asked to design and make outfits from recycled materials and model them for a panel of judges at the All Saints Church.

Designer Abigail Grosvenor, 14, won first place in the Older students' category with her skirt and accessories made from a polyester tent, modelled by Phao Wheatley, 15. Second place went to Laura Willis, 15, for her outfit made from old concertinaed maps with a recycled denim waistcoat. It was modelled by Lizzy Cody, 16, while Charlotte Fodder, 16, shaped her hair and makeup.
An extra prize was also awarded in this category to Lucy Dingle, 14, whom the judges felt deserved a special mention for her outfit made from sheet music and LPs.
First place in the Younger category was awarded to Rosanna Nichols, 11, who modelled a comic strip dress with chocolate box ribbon straps and paper bead jewellery. It was complemented by matching shoes and a red belt and was created with Sophie Scott and Samara Potter, both 12.
Second place went to Kirsty Swaine and Nadine Macnamara, both 9, for their recycled Christmas card outfit. Third place went to Florence Thompson, 11, for her individual effort in creating a bubble wrap dress and shoes.
Headmistress, Ann Aughwane, commented, "The style and creativity on display from all the participants was truly remarkable. The packed audience were certainly impressed. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for these budding designers and our thanks go to the organisers for their hard work."
