The pupils and staff of Burgess Hill School for Girls gathered on the grass to say farewell to their retiring Head Girl on Wednesday 12th May.
Upper Sixth student Gwenllian Williams was commended by the Headmistress, Mrs Ann Aughwane, for her enthusiasm and hard work as the head of the student community over the past academic year.
Gwenllian was praised for the way she carried out all her responsibilities to the full, and her last official duty was no exception. The annual tree planting ceremony has taken place for 28 years, but very rarely do any of the Head Girls insist on buying the tree and digging the hole before the ceremony!
Gwenllian was assisted by all members of her school officer team as they planted the tree. Emma Bonney and Samantha Chandrasekera were her deputies alongside Pollyanna Brackenbury, Georgina Coad, Elisa Fuller, Claire Lam, Emily McKinnell-Merrett, Alexandra Murray, Georgina Ridler, Shirley Yam and Rhiannon Whelan.
The new school officers for the next academic year were also announced. Elizabeth Lynch will take on the prestigious role of Head Girl with Sarah Lucas and Chloe de Souza as her deputies. Malaka Hilmy was selected as Head of Boarders with Vivian Wong as deputy and Maris Chan taking on the new position of Day and Boarding Liaison Co-ordinator.
Sixth Form Events Co-ordinator will be Stephanie Somerville and External Events Co-ordinator will be Kate Mactear. House Events Co-ordinator will be Beatrice Farmelo, with House Captains Yasmin Rashid for Burns house, Abigail Suggate for Milton, Kelly Smith for Thomas and Bethany Gavin for Yeats.
