Junior pupils at Burgess Hill School for Girls took part in the Tesco Great School Run 2010 by running or walking a two kilometre course around the school grounds on Thursday 17th June.
Two events took place with pupils in Years 5 and 6 running first and Years 3 and 4 in the second run. The girls were accompanied by supportive parents and staff who ran alongside the girls. All the girls ran with enthusiasm and the front runners were so keen they urged the Lower Sixth pacemaker, Kelly Smith, to run faster!
Many of the girls showed their support for classmates by returning to the track after finishing to join their friends as they completed their run. The runners were also cheered on by the Infants who stood alongside the track clapping and cheering them on.
Emma Shilton, Year 5, was one of the first to cross the finish line and said, "The run was fine, I didn't even feel worn out afterwards!"
The Tesco Great School Run, now in its sixth year, is being held at schools across the UK this week. It is a free event aimed at five to eleven year olds to encourage children to take part in exercise for fun and to help make physical exercise part of their lifestyles. The Run is sponsored by supermarket giant Tesco and supported by numerous sports stars including World Champion athlete Colin Jackson CBE and 400m Olympic medalist Katharine Merry.
