On Friday 12th January the Year 10 Life Skills class at Burgess Hill School for Girls received a visit from Mr Tim Mold, Director of the ‘Inside Out Trust’, who spoke to the group about his work developing prison projects based on restorative justice principles, and helped to highlight the facts about prison statistics rather than the prejudices sometimes acquired through biased media.
Tim began his presentation by giving the girls a questionnaire about prison statistics through which they learnt interesting facts such as that a high percentage of prisoners were excluded from school and have the writing skills of an 11 year old or less, and that out of the 100,000 people we will send to prison this year only 10% not the 50% assumed by the class, will include violence in their crime.
The vision of the Inside Out Trust is to break the cycle of prisoners repeating their crime and to give them skills which enable them to work and become useful members of the community on their release. Most of all it seeks to give them a sense of self-worth and value. It has grown from one Burgess Hill woman’s idea into a national project with 7 regional offices.
