Tropical fish and exotic butterflies provided the inspiration for the Year 6 classes of Burgess Hill School for Girls to create two hand-made felt panels as part of an exciting Textiles Technology Workshop held on Monday 15th January.
Having learnt the basic technique of felt-making the girls set about designing their creatures before vigorously rolling the wool fibres in warm water to make the wool felt together. The results were fantastic and the girls were very pleased with their joint effort!
The action packed day also involved the use of neoprene to make 3-dimensional flower and fish shaped lighting key fobs with two small batteries to power an LED. The holder was formed using a process called thermoforming with a plug and yolk mould which was a new experience for all the girls involved.
The key fobs will be attached to the felt work, and the colourful pieces, along with other items of textile work produced by students at the School, will be displayed at the Brighton Centre from 9th-11th February as part of the ‘Creative Stitches and Hobbycrafts Fair’.
