On Friday 2nd February Year 5 and Year 8 from Burgess Hill School for Girls took part in two fun and informative workshops led by Rob Nice from the Architecture Workshops Association. The girls really enjoyed the hands-on building and, at the same time, they learned about what a structure needs to be stable. To quote one of the girls, “I thought architecture was for boys, but when Rob came to our school he taught me that girls can do it too, so when I’m older I’m going to be an architect”.
Year 8 had the task of building various different types of bridges, each one getting more complicated. Each team had their own set of sticks and rubber bands and faced the challenge of working out how to support the bridges. It also involved the girls in learning to work together – one team actually commented that the strongest thing in their structure was their team work!
Year 5 were next and their challenge was to build a replica of the Globe Theatre using triangles. The girls couldn’t believe that they managed to build such a sturdy design, again with just a few sticks and rubber bands.
Architecture Workshops offer cross curricular workshops for all key stages, where visualising, designing, creating, calculating and analysing are presented through practical activities.
