A teacher at Burgess Hill School for Girls has flown to Zambia with a suitcase packed full of stationery to give to girls in need of supplies for their education.
Girls in the Junior School donated masses of pens, pencils, crayons, pencil cases and sticker books and brought them into school to present to Mrs King in an assembly.
Mrs Jane King, Head of Business Studies & Economics in the Senior School, is travelling to Zambia to train teachers in connection with a girls' entrepreneurship project. She will be taking the stationery to give to girls being supported by the charity CAMFED; the Campaign for Female Education.
CAMFED works in communities in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania to help girls most in need of an education. They are supported thoughout Primary, Secondary and Higher education. Girls who live too far from a school are given supplies so that they can board at their school.
Education for girls in sub-Saharan Africa means they are likely to earn more money which they usually reinvested in their families. An educated young woman is more likely to have fewer, healthier children and is three times less likely to become HIV-positive.
We will bring you more news on this once Mrs King returns to England.
