The Burgess Hill School for Girls' Chess team returned from Windlesham House as winners of the first round of the Butler Cup Under 14 Chess Competition.
The competition was run by Sussex Junior Chess and took place on Monday 17th January.
Eleven teams entered the competition across Sussex; the first round was played as three different tournaments, and the winners of each will go forward to the next round.
There were four schools competing in the Western area tournament: one from Burgess Hill School, one from Windlesham House and two teams from Angmering School. The Burgess Hill team played each of the other teams, and scored nine points. This put them in first place, closely followed by the Windlesham House team.
Mrs Lynn Woroniecki said "The atmosphere was very friendly throughout the tournament and our team really enjoyed themselves. They are looking forward to playing in the next round."
The team was made up of Year 9 students Katie Lane, Eliza McHugh, Lauren Merry and Hannah Watkinson.
