Six students at Burgess Hill School for Girls have excelled in prestigious international maths competitions and have been awarded certificates for their achievements.

Julia Zuang, Year 11, took part in the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad, after performing so well in the first round of the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge in February. Julia's maths skills put her in the top 25% of students who competed in the Olympiad and she received a certificate of distinction.

Ellie Warner, Year 10, also did very well competing in the Olympiad competition after she achieved over 99 points in the earlier Intermediate Mathematics Challenge. She was awarded a certificate of merit.

Only 1,800 students from across the world qualified for the Olympiad competition, which involves a two hour Mathematics examination and the standard was very high.

Four students from Burgess Hill School were selected to take part in the International Kangaroo competitions alongside three million students worldwide.

Eliza McHugh, Year 9, and Ashley Ma, Year 10, both received certificates of merit for finishing in the top 25% of the Kangaroo competitors. Sally Emerson, Year 9, and Shannon Gunawarda, Year 10, both received a certificate of participation. All students were awarded prizes of key rings and booklets of Maths questions.

Head of Mathematics, Mrs Lynn Woroniecki, described the results as "A fantastic achievement for all these girls, and another new record for the school."

Burgess Hill School for Girls received their best results for four years in the National Mathematics Competition in February.
