Burgess Hill School for Girls celebrates its centenary year in 2006 and the Charity Committee has decided to support The Bluebird Appeal. Bluebird provides accessible transport for people in Mid-Sussex with short or long-term disabilities and has been faced with increasing needs in the community, especially in travel to Princess Royal Hospital. Bluebird Chief Executive Michael Stratford spoke to the senior school assembly and explained to the girls that the bluebird was a symbol of freedom to the North American Indians. This was linked in the famous song performed by Dame Vera Lynn with the ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ also a potent symbol of freedom. It now represents the ‘freedom’ the organisation provides to those with disabilities. Launching a poster competition, he said, “Everything Bluebird has achieved over the past two years has been down to hard work and the generosity of our users and supporters. We are really pleased that your Charity Committee has decided to support our work in this important year for the school”. The first of many money raising events will be a book sale for pupils to be held later in the Spring Term.
