Students from Burgess Hill School for Girls in West Sussex performed their interpretation of the play 'Our Country's Good' in three performances during December.

The cast of fourteen was made up of girls from Year 11 to Upper Sixth and they were accompanied by boys from Central Sussex College in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

The play, written by Timberlake Wertenbaker, is based on the novel 'The Playmaker' by Thomas Keneally. It tells the story of convicts working together to put on the play 'The Recruiting Officer' by Farquhar after settling in their colony in New South Wales.

The characters in the play are based on real convicts and officers who lived during the reign of King George III when the British government sent a fleet of ships to colonize Australia. On board were nearly 1,500 officers, seamen, marines, and convicts.

The small cast took on multiple roles as two or three characters. The lighting, sound and makeup was managed by other students at the school.

Miss Tarratt, Director and Head of Drama at Burgess Hill School, said "The challenging text was performed to an exceptionally high standard, with the cast producing stunning and emotional performances and the crew working as hard as ever to produce a fantastic production."
