Burgess Hill School for Girls pupil, Emma Parkhouse, was chosen as one of five young clarinettists from the South East to take part in a masterclass given by former Young Musician of the Year Emma Johnson MBE as part of the fourth annual Royal Tunbridge Wells International Music Festival. Emma Parkhouse played the Second Movement of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, and Emma Johnson was so moved and delighted by the young Emma's performance that she allowed her to perform the whole movement to the delight of an appreciative audience. The international star, described by the Times as "Britain's Favourite Clarinettist", gave Emma, a student in Year 11 at Burgess Hill School for Girls, some very useful pointers including a different approach to breathing from the diaphragm which Emma has already incorporated into her practice routine.
Emma Johnson conducted the masterclass on the eve of her performance of Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto with the City of London Sinfonia as part of this year's Festival of fifteen concerts and outreach workshops.
