Three sixth form students from Burgess Hill School for Girls gained top prizes in the Textiles section of ‘The Young Craftsman of the Year Competition’ held at the recent South of England Show. Scarlett Tull gained the overall Gold Award and the title of ‘Young Craftsman of the Year 2007’ when her little black dress was described as the ‘Best in the Competition’, Louise Mulcahy came third, and Lauren Smith was awarded a special prize for the ‘most creative and innovative‘ use of materials.
Scarlett’s little black dress, based on a 1920’s design, was delicately beaded by hand, and trimmed with beaded lace. The fabrics were extremely difficult to work with, and required considerable care and patience. Scarlett is considering a career in fashion design in the future. Louise’s hand-made felt panel was totally different. It was based on Darcy Bussell and depicted the ballerina taking her final bow, surrounded by red roses. Lauren designed and made a lovely jacket which featured knitted strips pinched together to create diamond patterns.
Mrs. Barbara Bradley who teaches Textiles at the school was delighted with the achievements of the girls. “They all worked so hard and they thoroughly deserve these prestigious awards. This year the competition saw over 150 entries, so it was a fantastic achievement to be judged to be the ‘Best in show’.”
