Burgess Hill School for Girls’ U16 Hockey team took part in the County round of the National Schools Competition last week, held at Farlington and Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham. 14 strong schools entered the tournament so the competition was tough. In the group stage the girls settled down to play some excellent attacking hockey to dominate their section by beating Roedean 2-0, Eastbourne College 1-0, Cardinal Newman 4-0, Farlington 3-0 and drawing 0 -0 with Brighton College and Moira House to go through as winners of the section.
The girls then travelled to Christ’s Hospital to play St Leonards Mayfield in the semi final. Here the girls really rose to the challenge and played their best hockey of the tournament. The passing was slick, the tackling was strong, and the desire to win was really evident; the girls coming through to win 2-0 to book a place in the final. Here they were up against Millais School from Horsham; this time they were determined to make it their day. The midfield continued to work tirelessly up and down the pitch with the defence holding firm and the forwards running everything down and taking every opportunity to get some shots on target. It was a marvellous display of team work which resulted in a 1-0 victory to take the title to become Sussex Champions. The girls now go on to represent Sussex at the Regional Round to be held at Surbiton Hockey Club next month.
