Students from Years 8 and 9 at Burgess Hill School for Girls attended a ‘Heritage Skills’ day held at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, organized by the Sector Skills Council for Construction Skills. The girls were able to compare the more recently constructed Downland Gridshell building based on the rolling hills of the South Downs, with its arching wooden frame, with more traditional dwellings and buildings. During the interactive tasks, girls participated in a Lime Slaking workshop where traditional lime mortar was prepared. They also took part in a ‘hands-on’ session where construction materials and methods of joining them were explored.
