The first production of the 2007/2008 season at Burgess Hill School for Girls kicked off with a production of ‘Steel Magnolias’ by Robert Harling this week.  The play was made into a film starring Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts and is set in a Beauty Parlour in North Louisiana, US in the mid 1980s.  It follows the lives of six female characters through the gamut of life’s ups and downs.  It was great fun for the students involved to play characters not only from a different era, but also a different culture from their own, and they rose to the challenge beautifully.

The director, Liz Meredith-Jones, commented that “Steel Magnolias is both a funny and moving play and our aim was that the audience left the auditorium with a smile on their faces and a warm fuzzy glow inside, which we achieved!  The girls worked incredibly hard and it has resulted in performances that were powerfully realistic.”

The season continues with a production of ‘Les Misérables’ next March.
