The players of Worthing Thunder Basketball Team stormed to a famous victory last Saturday thanks to the fantastic support of a group of youngsters from Burgess Hill School for Girls who travelled across Sussex for their first experience of live basketball. Two of the girls, Annabel Mansfield and Jessica Kinghorn, ran out on court with the team as mascots for the evening while others joined ‘The Thunder Cats’ and became honourable cheerleaders for the night.
Basketball has been introduced as an extra-curricular activity within the Junior department of the School and the pupils have had the privilege of working with the Worthing coach, Rob Newsome.
The band of youngsters, led by P.E. teacher Caroline Petty, joined in enthusiastically with the chants and cheers of the crowd and met the players afterwards on court to collect autographs and mementoes of their visit.
Said one young supporter, Eliza McHugh, “I’ve never experienced anything like it! Every child in Sussex should come and watch. It’s so fast, so furious, so fantastic! I’ll be back!”
