‘Around the World in Five Days’ was this year’s theme for Junior School Book Week at Burgess Hill School for Girls. Wednesday was surely the most colourful day the School had seen for some time with girls and staff dressing up in costumes from other countries.   We had a Canadian lumberjack, a leprechaun, beautiful flamenco dresses, cowboys, Hiawatha and representatives from all over the globe!

The week saw everyone steeped in books, concentrating on the joys of reading, writing and listening to literature in all its forms.   The week kicked off with the inspirational Charlie Wilson from Crick Crack Storytelling who, with stories, rhymes, songs and music, had everyone from 4 to 50+ hanging on his every word.   Parents came in to tell traditional stories from countries where they were born.   The girls had the opportunity to buy second hand books in Year 2’s Book Sale and new books from an exciting collection of recommended books brought to school by Gary Carton of Bookbox International.

The infants all worked together, mixing across classes to produce their own Big Books with stunning results.  The Junior School’s new English Coordinator, Janet Smith, who organised this highly successful week, said, ‘It’s wonderful to see the true art of storytelling alive and kicking, something I remember so well from my youth.’

Emma, a pupil new to the school commented, ‘We never had a Book Week at my old school.   This has been one of the best weeks.’
