Girls in Year 2 at Burgess Hill School for Girls have been learning about The Great Fire of London as part of their History topic. They celebrated the end of their topic with a retelling of the well-known story in their class assembly with a bit of a modern twist. ‘Polly Pushy’ (from ‘Ye Olde News of the World’) guided the audience through the tragic events, ably assisted by a full cast of fashion-conscious and media-savvy historical figures.

After suffering a house fire herself, the girls’ teacher Mrs Pearson invited Carol Hart from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to talk about what has been learnt about fire prevention since the Great Fire. Carol then undertook tailor-made workshops after the assembly with the girls from Reception class, Year 2 and Year 5. Year 2 particularly enjoyed re-enacting the ‘Stop, drop and roll’ method to putting out fire from clothes.

During the assembly, parents were made aware of the importance of checking smoke detectors every week as part of the family routine. The Infants particularly liked the idea of buying their smoke detectors a new battery as a Christmas present every year. Thanks to the hands-on approach from West Sussex Fire and Rescue, awareness has been raised and essential life skills have been developed for the girls.
