Around the World in an afternoon!

On Friday 9th May, Burgess Hill Junior School held a 'Performing Arts' afternoon consisting of musical, dance and drama workshops themed 'Around the World'.

18 girls from the School's Year 5 classes were joined by Year 5 pupils from Manor Field School, Twineham C.E. School and St Mary's C.E. Primary (Horsham), making a total of 60 boys and girls for the workshops. The pupils wore black trousers and their own brightly coloured T-shirts, which made it a very colourful event! Pupils were formed into 3 mixed groups and learned a musical piece, a dance and a dramatic tableau.

Farouk Bhimji, a dance instructor from Harrow, who has worked with Justin Timberlake and Bollywood stars, taught the pupils in the dance workshops. They learnt Hip Hop, Salsa Dancing and a Bollywood style dance from India. In the music workshops, the three groups of children also learnt songs from different countries with Mrs Playford and performed African Drumming with Miss Armitage, both teachers in Burgess Hill Junior School. In the drama workshops the pupils learnt to act out traditional folk tales with Mrs Harrison-Iddon who teaches in Burgess Hill Senior School. All the children showed great enthusiasm for each workshop.

At the end of the afternoon, the parents arrived to see their children perform. The seats quickly filled and parents awaited the performances with bated breath. Considering that each workshop lasted only half an hour, the parents and staff were very proud of how much the pupils had learnt and were very impressed with the childrens' performances. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the School hopes to be able to host such an event again very soon.
