On Sunday 3rd December a team of eight students from Burgess Hill School for Girls went to East Grinstead to take part in the Under 18 Sussex Girls’ Chess Championship.
The girls ranged in age from 9 (Year 5) to 17 (Lower Sixth). Every girl played five matches in total, competing against experienced players from a number of different schools in Sussex. The scores of the best three players from each school were compared and Burgess Hill won the Best School Team competition, achieving first place in Sussex. The girls also won various other awards within their year groups.
Mrs Woroniecki, who runs the school chess club, said “It was a very exciting day, and I am delighted that the girls did so well. Chess is a popular activity which appeals to students of all ages. Chess club gives them the opportunity to play with students from other year groups and to learn new tactics together”.
