The Young Craftsman of the Year competition held at the South of England show ground this year attracted almost 150 entries from young people in the South. Visitors to the exhibition were amazed by the wealth of talent, ingenuity and skill demonstrated by the students. This unique competition and exhibition is held annually at the South of England Show to promote crafts and skills and to encourage young people to produce work of very high quality. The standard of the competition seems to improve each year.
Burgess Hill School for Girls students were successful in the Textiles section. Rebecca Allen made a Tudor dress to be worn at Anne of Cleves House in Lewes. The bodice was fully boned and the skirt featured a hand printed panel. Both Hannah Alldis and Eleanor Pollard, who are studying GCSE Textile Technology were awarded prestigious ‘Special Awards’ for students aged under 17 years of age. Hannah’s long satin dress was designed to be worn by the ’White Witch’ and Eleanor’s retro dress was inspired by the poodle dresses worn during the 1950s.
