On Tuesday 6th June, twenty two Year 5 pupils from seven local Sussex Junior Schools came together for an exciting Design and Technology Workshop, hosted by Burgess Hill School for Girls. The aim of the workshop was to design and build a kite which was suitable to be sold commercially.
The task involved the pupils learning many new skills including CAD (computer aided design) to design the pattern template on the kite; these templates were then cut using the CAMM cutter. The shapes of the pattern templates were then applied to the nylon fabric of the kite. During the construction of the kite, sewing machines and an iron were used by all pupils, including the boys! The pupils also used their computer skills to produce a Health & Safety leaflet to be provided with the finished kite.
At the end of the action packed day there was some time to test-fly the brightly coloured kites on the School’s playing field. Even though there was little wind to reach the highest heights, there was a slight breeze and all the kites flew successfully. It was an exciting day for all the schools involved; they had great fun and learned a lot too! Molly: “We used different material. I learnt how to make a kite and I loved the whole day”, Jade: “I liked making the kites and ironing the face on. I also liked having lunch here and would like to do it again”.
