The excitement in Wimbledon is not only happening on the grass courts! Graduate shows at Wimbledon College of Arts are also taking place. Nicola Herlihy a past student of Burgess Hill School for Girls has just graduated from the Costume Interpretation course at the College. Her fabulous final piece was an Elizabethan costume complete with ruff and all the undergarments.
Mrs Barbara Bradley, who taught Nicola A-Level Textiles when she was a student at the School, visited the exhibition and was totally bowled over by the extremely high standard of all the work on display. Students concentrate on making historically accurate costumes to be worn in the theatre and in films. The process involves detailed corsetry and embellishment of the fabrics. The day became even more exciting when Nicola received an offer to become a member of the wardrobe department making the costumes for Phantom of the Opera.
