“Learning, but having fun at the same time” was the quote from one Year 8 student at Burgess Hill School for Girls when the Carbon Challenge Roadshow visited the school on Wednesday 2nd July. The team of three presenters from the Enterprising Science programme held two sessions with girls from Years 8, 9 and 10 on the subject of carbon emissions and how the girls can help reduce the School’s carbon footprint.
Each session was action packed and included an interactive quiz, discussions, presentations and role play. It was an enjoyable way to get a serious message across; the roadshow was presented in such a way as to keep the students fully engaged and having fun, whilst learning that if everyone does their own little bit to save energy, it can have an enormous effect on the world’s energy situation.
The sessions concluded with the girls coming up with their own carbon challenge action plan as to how the school can save energy. Some ideas were straight forward, for example, turning off the lights in an empty classroom, not leaving computers switched on and making full use of the recycling bins around the School. Other ideas may be a little harder to implement; changing the current School minibuses to ones which run on hydrogen, whilst an excellent idea, may take a little longer to be realised.
