On Sunday December 7th, a team of seven girls from Burgess Hill School went to East Grinstead to take part in the Under 18 Sussex Girls' Chess Championship. Everyone played five matches in total, competing against experienced players from a number of different schools in Sussex. The best three players' scores from each school team were compared, and we were delighted that the Burgess Hill School team achieved second place in Sussex, and were awarded a trophy.

Four members of the team were awarded individual trophies; 2nd and 3rd place in the Sussex Under 18 championship, 1st place in the Under 14 section, and an Arbiter's award for playing consistently well.

Mrs Woroniecki, who runs the school chess club, said "It was a pleasure to take the girls to this competition which is very well organised by Sussex Junior Chess. The standard of play was particularly high this year and I am very pleased that the girls all did so well."
