Rhythmic drumming and the sound of cicadas welcomed girls and parents to Year 5's class assembly at Burgess Hill School for Girls on Wednesday 29th November.
Having been inspired by a recent school trip to Drusillas Zoo Park, Year 5 went on to research tropical rainforest animals and their habitats. The girls brought their own version of an Amazonian tribal ceremony by playing the djembe drums, wearing head-dresses, body ornaments and painting their faces.
Fenneke Fulleylove, Head of the Junior School said, “Every year our Year 5 pupils take this issue to their hearts and, by the end of the project, they speak passionately and knowledgably about the subject. If some of these girls end up in politics, I think the world will be in good hands. Today’s fabulous assembly got us all clapping but more importantly, it got everyone thinking about the frightening effects that the disappearing rainforests are having on our world”. A Year 5 pupil said, "The rainforest is an amazing topic and we should carry on learning about it so that we don't destroy it".
