On Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December Burgess Hill School for Girls U15 Tennis Team took part in the National Finals of the Nestlé Schools Tennis Competition in Bolton. 1000 schools originally entered the competition which started last April, and the Burgess Hill girls had made it through to the final four to compete in this round.
The standard of play was exceptionally high and the girls faced some very tough opposition in all of their games. In the first match they were a bit overawed with the occasion and nerves took their toll as they were swept away by a strong Talbot Heath side from Bournemouth. However in the next two matches the girls rose to the challenge and all four girls beat higher rated players. The second match hinged on a doubles and the girls narrowly lost it, to Hymers College, Hull. In the final match, the girls showed great strength of character and determination to bring a convincing win of 5 matches to 1 against Loughborough College, Leicester. This gained them THIRD place in the whole country. An outstanding achievement.
