Sarah Lucas, a Year 11 pupil at Burgess Hill School for Girls has won a week in Wales on a residential writing course after winning a prestigious poetry competition.
Sarah Lucas is one of sixteen winners of the national Poetry Live! Poetry Competition. Her poem, titled ‘Dieppe 2009’, was written in remembrance of the World War II Battle of Dieppe in France. Her poem impressed the prominent British poets Gillian Clarke and Imtiaz Dharkar who sat on the Poetry Live! judging panel.
Sarah will travel to the Tŷ Newydd National Writers’ Centre in north Wales, which hosts courses for writers from all over the world. There she will join other young writers to learn writing skills from the poets Gillian Clarke and Daljit Nagra.
The competition was open to all GCSE students who attended a Poetry Live! school event, which are held at numerous locations across the UK. Burgess Hill School for Girls’ pupils regularly attend the Poetry Live! tours where the girls have the opportunity to listen to poems and speak to the successful poets they study at GSCE, including Ted Hughes, Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy.
