History in Brass

Year 5 at Burgess Hill School for Girls were treated to a busy hands-on afternoon learning about Tudor symbolism from the Sussex based company History in Brass.

The lesson took place on Friday 29th January and served as an introduction to their topic on The Tudors.

The visit began with an interactive, illustrated talk using original brass rubbings taken from churches and cathedrals throughout England.  The girls then made their own rubbings from replica brasses, which were so impressive that they are now proudly displayed on the walls of their classroom.

History in Brass work with school children across the South of England and aim to enrich the curriculum with their brass rubbing activities.  They have two mobile brass rubbing centres based in Hurstpierpoint and Sevenoaks and attend as guests at craft and medieval fairs, historical sites and National Trust locations.
