Year 6 Trip to Brancaster Staithe
At 6.15am on Monday 10th May 2010, Year 6 excitedly set off from school to go to Brancaster Staithe, North Norfolk. It was a five hour journey and was very tiring; luckily, there was a Service Station where we were able to stop and eat our breakfast and stretch our legs for about thirty minutes before we had to get back on the coach and continue on our journey.
We arrived at our destination at 11:00am and it was a lovely sunny day. We were staying at a National Trust Centre, called the 'Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre' (B.M.A.C.). The first thing we saw as we got off the coach was the house and the sea behind it. Then we went inside, where we were briefed on the rules and regulations of the centre and how the week was to work. We were also told about our activity groupings and dormitory allocations.
Our first job was to unpack all of our belongings into our assigned dormitories. For lunch on the first day we had a picnic style meal before heading out to Blakeney Point to see the seals. Other activities that we took part in during the week were, 'Go Green', teambuilding, village study, sailing, model rafting, kayaking, crabbing and orienteering.
The major focus of the trip was to promote looking after the environment. In order to help us to do this, there was a 'land fill' bucket into which we put all our food waste and any compost was placed in another bucket. Both buckets were weighed after each meal and by the end of the week we had 0 grams of waste in the land fill bucket for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Each dormitory was assigned an 'Eco-Ranger' job. The 'Rotters' had to weigh the compost, the 'Garden Gnomes' were in charge of looking after the garden, the 'Sparks' were in charge of turning off the lights, the 'Stinkers' weighed the landfill, the 'Fair Traders' ran the Fair trade shop, the 'Clangers' were in charge of recycling cans and the 'Salvage Squad' had to recycle the cardboard boxes.
Our week at Brancaster was action-packed and really fun and I think the experience of being away for a week was beneficial for us all. We learned to become more eco-friendly and will be able to use this experience to help us put into action how we can help the environment at home. We have worked on our team-building skills and the experience of spending the week together has also helped us to build up trust and co-operation with each other. We learned many other skills during our week away and many of us would have loved to have stayed longer! Brancaster was an amazing experience and none of us shall ever forget it.
