Boarding

The School is pleased to welcome girls into a full boarding environment from age 11, with casual/flexi boarding available from age 7.

If you choose to send your daughter to Burgess Hill School for Girls as a boarder, she will live in one of three very attractive boarding houses each with its own modern facilities. There are light and spacious common rooms, good computer facilities, a games room, and kitchens for making snacks. The gardens are used for summer barbeques and relaxation. The houses are run as informally as possible, creating the atmosphere of a happy family home. Safety, happiness and security are of paramount importance.

The staff are experienced, sensitive, supportive and helpful. They appreciate fully the adjustments that both students and parents often have to make when a girl boards for the first time. The Housemistresses, who have their own accommodation in the Houses, and the two GAP assistants will always be available to guide and comfort your daughter if she faces any problems.

Younger boarders share a room and Sixth Formers graduate from sharing to having their own bedroom.

Meals are taken together in the Dining Hall and wholesome, carefully prepared meals ensure balanced diets for all boarders. A salad bar is always available.

Good communication between the Boarding Houses and School is seen as an important element, enabling boarders to achieve their full academic potential. The Housemistresses attend Pastoral meetings and will be kept informed of your daughter's academic progress by her tutor and the Head of Lower School, Head of Upper School or Head of Sixth Form.

Homework for girls in Years 7-10 is supervised each evening in the Learning Resource Centre. In this way the girls quickly establish good study habits as well as having access to the networked computers in Webb House and other resources – books, videos, DVDs and tapes.

Your daughter can easily keep in touch with you and her friends at home. Not only can she bring her own mobile phone, but email is also readily available in each boarding house, as are pay/card phones. Email is also an easy and effective way for you to contact House staff.

The school provides excellent 'English as an Additional Language' (EAL) support, if necessary.

The boarding experience is of great benefit, teaching as it does important skills such as taking personal responsibility and living in harmony with others; invaluable skills to learn before going to university or college. There is a strong sense of community where loyal and caring friendships lend support and encouragement to every individual.

Boarding

"My life at school as a boarder is very enjoyable. The school is a friendly environment and I feel at home here. I always have someone to talk to. When I first entered the boarding community, everybody was so kind, asking whether I had any questions or queries. We have excellent facilities here at Burgess Hill School for Girls, from the library, which contains around twelve thousand books, to our Technology Department. At our school we have lots of extra curricular activities such as, extra sports clubs at lunchtime and after school.  We have extra music lessons and speech and drama lessons too. We not only do well academically we also do a lot of performing arts. Coming to this school feels like an amazing opportunity and a great privilege."
