Year 8 Science Day
On Monday 28th January, Year 8 students at Burgess Hill School for Girls enjoyed a visit from Jonathan Hare, a team member of the BBC’s Rough Science programme, and Richard Robinson, founder of the Brighton Science Festival, sponsor of the event.
Dr. Hare, a chemist, physicist, inventor and teacher who runs the Creative Science Centre based at the University of Sussex, provided the students with torches, mirrors, headphones and a solar panel. He then gave groups of the girls the task of transmitting their voices across the room using only this equipment.
Each group reflected the light from a torch onto a mirror and from there to a solar panel receiver attached to headphones. The mirror was made to vibrate as the students spoke and the voice was then transmitted on the light beam across the room to the receiver.
The 12 and 13 year olds rose admirably to the challenge and they all enjoyed putting science into action.
