Boarders' News On the 7th of June, a group of Boarders went over to the South of England Show. We actually did not have much idea about what to expect. When we first arrived, all we could see was a huge green field; we smelt the freshness of cut grass and sweet hay; tinged with... well, let’s say we later discovered it was left by the animals!
The whole place was packed with every kind of vehicle. There were a lot of people with enthusiastic faces. After Miss Buckley gave us the instructions and maps of the site, we split ourselves into smaller groups just in front of the Queen’s Jubilee Hall, which was an enormous market hall. The different stands and stores were so eye-catching and drew us in. The hall was even more crowded with animated chattering people inside.
When we finally squeezed through, a really surprising and a totally unexpected scene came into our sight. Hundreds of cows, sheep, pigs and other farm animals penned up or being led about by men in brown coats. We were not expecting that! We continued to stroll around the huge site of the show under the bright sun.
Most of the stalls were of farming stuffs, or at least somewhat related to outdoor activities. There were some exceptions though, a presentation ceremony awarding outstanding craftsmen. Some girls from our school have achieved a high standard in their groups and we were very proud to see their work displayed.
At around noon, the pack lunch simply failed to fulfil the needs from our stomachs. Therefore, we decided to buy some rather expensive burgers and donuts. After lunch, we were attracted by a big game stall with a number of farming animal dolls hanging down from the top. We hurried over there and joined in the game. After some exciting moments, we finally won three extremely massive banana dolls that were even taller than us and two tiger puppets. They were very heavy and took up a seat each on the bus.
Coming from such a busy city like Hong Kong we have never seen (or smelt) so many farm animals so closely in one place. Certainly a day to remember!
